When residents can't get a pothole fixed, the first problem often isn't asphalt. It's information. Alachua County, Florida, is trying to fix both.
On September 15, the county launched an online Pothole Portal built on PSD Portal's "Citywide" software. Residents can pinpoint a defect on an interactive map, report it with or without creating an account, and track it through the county's digital system. Each report is routed automatically to the appropriate road file, and staff use the portal's analytics to prioritize repairs and allocate resources.

On September 30, the county shared its first results. More than 400 reports had come in during the portal's first two weeks. Public Works crews had filled 2,206 potholes using 85.52 tons of material, and had strip-milled and resurfaced 3,263 linear feet of roadway using another 71.23 tons. The county says it will publish weekly progress reports.

Frustration came first

The portal didn't arrive in a vacuum. WCJB reported that it launched amid growing resident frustration over the number of potholes in the county. At a September 22 county commission meeting, residents described swerving vehicles, bent rims and blown-out tires on one southwest Gainesville road, according to The Independent Florida Alligator. Public Works Director Ramon Gavarrete described the portal as part of "a concerted effort to improve our pothole repair effort," alongside new crews and machinery.

Two numbers, two kinds of repair

The most useful detail in the county's update is the split between its two repair types.
Pothole filling addresses discrete defects: a hole is cleaned out, filled and compacted. Strip milling goes further. The county uses a 4-foot-wide milling machine to remove damaged pavement in targeted areas and replace it with new asphalt, without resurfacing an entire road.
That distinction matters because not all pavement damage is a pothole problem. Speaking about Southwest 75th Street, Gavarrete told commissioners that widespread fatigue cracking calls for more than patching: "The only solution with the problem is milling and resurfacing all the roadways." Fatigue cracking, often called alligator cracking, is a sign that the pavement structure itself is wearing out. Patching individual holes on a road like that is a holding action.
The county's approach reflects a sound maintenance hierarchy:

Isolated potholes on otherwise sound pavement: fill them quickly and well.

Localized failure along a lane or wheel path: strip-mill and resurface that section.

Widespread fatigue: plan and budget for full milling and resurfacing.

Getting more from every pothole fill

Even with milling in the mix, filling remains the highest-volume job, and it's where material choice has the biggest effect on repeat visits. Florida's afternoon storms and summer heat make for a tough test: wet holes, hot pavement and steady traffic.
That's the kind of job EZ STREET® Ambient® Asphalt is engineered for. It's ready to use from the bag or in bulk, formulated to work in water, and bonds to asphalt and concrete without a tack coat. It stays thermally resilient as pavement temperatures swing, and it's ready for traffic immediately after compaction. For a county working through hundreds of portal reports, a material crews can place even when the hole is wet lowers the odds that the same location shows up again in next week's report.

Data plus durability

Alachua County's portal is a smart step. Map-based reporting cuts duplicate calls, helps crews route efficiently and gives managers evidence for where milling budgets should go. Weekly public updates build trust. The next step for any agency using this kind of system is to track repeat reports at the same location, which is the clearest measure of whether repairs are holding.
The same logic works for homeowners' associations, campuses and commercial lots: log defects, look for patterns, and match the repair to the damage. When the data shows a road needs milling, mill it. When it shows an isolated pothole, fill it once with a performance-proven material such as Ambient®. Festival deadlines have a way of focusing minds on road repair. In West Bengal this year, the deadline comes with a guarantee attached.
The state government says it will repair 3,081 roads under urban local bodies ahead of Durga Puja, with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari setting October 10, Mahalaya, as the deadline. On October 1, Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul said the cost is likely to touch ₹1,000 crore. And in a move aimed at durability beyond the festive season, the government says it will strictly enforce a five-year Defect Liability Period for contractors.

AI-generated illustration.

A statewide push against the clock

The programme spans roads managed by municipalities, municipal corporations and development authorities. Roads under the Railways, port authorities and National Highways are being handled through coordination with those agencies, since the state's Public Works Department can't repair roads outside its jurisdiction.
The monsoon has made the job harder. "Some roads are still in poor condition because the rain is making it difficult to carry out the work," Paul said. According to The Statesman, she said the state has introduced a quick-fix method that can be used even during the monsoon, with materials procured from outside the state, and that the chief minister has called for night work under lights if needed. Some tenders were still being processed as of October 1.

The policy that matters most: a five-year guarantee

Deadlines get roads repaired. Liability keeps them repaired.
Under the Defect Liability Period, contractors are responsible for rectifying defects that emerge during the five-year window without additional payment. "If the road deteriorates during this guarantee period, the contractor will have to repair it free of cost," Paul said. During an inspection of south Kolkata roads on September 29, she was even more direct: "We will have to ensure that the repaired stretches last for five years. This is the public's money. You can't misuse it."
The idea isn't unique to India. In January, the UK's Pothole Partnership, whose founding partners include the AA, JCB, British Cycling and the National Motorcyclists Council, called for a five-year warranty on every non-emergency pothole repair. The principle is the same everywhere: when the party doing the repair carries the cost of failure, incentives line up behind quality.

What a guarantee changes on the ground

A five-year liability rule changes the economics of every repair decision. Under a short-term mindset, the cheapest material and the fastest placement win, even if the patch fails after the next heavy rain. Under a liability mindset, every early failure is a cost the contractor absorbs. That pushes repair crews toward:

Proper preparation: clearing debris and standing water, shaping the hole and compacting thoroughly.

Drainage attention: Paul also told officials to get manholes and catchpits cleaned, and water is at the root of most pavement failure.

Materials that hold up: repairs that bond to the surrounding pavement and stay stable through heat, heavy rain and traffic.

Enforcement will be the real test. A defect liability period only works if defects are inspected, documented and acted on, so agencies need clear records of where and when each repair was made, and by whom.

Where engineered materials fit

For contractors working under warranty-style conditions, the repair material becomes part of risk management. EZ STREET® Ambient® Asphalt is a ready-to-use, engineered asphalt formulated to work in water, which matters when monsoon showers are still interrupting work. It bonds to asphalt, concrete and itself, is ready for traffic immediately after placement, and is thermally resilient as temperatures move from hot, humid afternoons to cooler nights. Because it can be stockpiled for months without degrading, crews can keep material on hand between rain spells instead of waiting on supply.

A model worth watching

West Bengal's drive will be judged first on whether roads are ready by October 10. The bigger test comes later: how many of those repairs are still sound five years from now. If the liability rule is enforced as promised, it could become a useful model for any government that wants its road budget to buy durability rather than repeat work.
For contractors facing that kind of accountability, choosing an enduring, performance-proven repair material such as Ambient® is simple risk management. Learn more at ezstreetasphalt.com.

The first frosts haven't settled in across northern England yet, but road teams are already playing defence.
On October 6, Lancashire County Council set out how it is preparing its network for winter after what it called "a challenging period in early 2026." Backed by a further £10 million approved by cabinet last month, total investment in Lancashire's roads for 2026/27 now stands at £88.9 million. Across the Pennines in South Yorkshire, Barnsley Council is weighing an extra £10 million of its own, with a stated aim of reducing repeated temporary pothole fixes.

AI-generated illustration.

Two councils, one message: the most affordable pothole repair is the one you only have to do once.

Lessons from a rough start to the year

Lancashire says it used lessons from early 2026 to put "a greater emphasis on preventative maintenance and longer-lasting repairs designed to improve the resilience of the road network." The numbers are substantial. Over the last 12 months, highways teams completed more than 100,000 pothole repairs. Since April, they have resurfaced more than 361,000 square metres and applied over 1.16 million square metres of surface dressing. Crews have also cleaned 74,153 gullies to help the network cope with heavy rain.
The council's performance figures deserve a closer look. It reports that 94.56% of its A, B and C roads are in good or fair condition and that 80.90% of defect repairs were completed on time. Most interesting for anyone who manages pavement, 83.71% of defect repairs were completed as a first-time fix. All three measures beat the council's targets.
County Councillor Warren Goldsworthy, cabinet member for Highways and Transport, struck a realistic tone: "We know our roads are not perfect and there is always more work to do, but the work completed so far means we're entering the season in the best position possible."

Barnsley's focus on repeat repairs

Barnsley's proposal, reported on October 5, would add £10 million over four years to the council's existing £18.3 million highways capital programme. According to the council, the money would expand frontline repair teams and support a wider range of repair methods and materials that are less likely to need repeat repairs. The proposal is due to go to cabinet on November 4 and has not yet been approved.
The council has been open about the dilemma behind it. In February, after heavy rain, freezing temperatures and repeated freeze-thaw cycles drove a sharp rise in defects, Barnsley explained that it carries out temporary repairs when a pothole could put people at risk but the weather or conditions aren't right for a longer-lasting fix. Every highway authority with a northern winter knows that trade-off.

Why winter punishes weak repairs

Freeze-thaw is the enemy of a marginal patch. Water seeps into gaps around the edge of a repair, freezes, expands and pushes the material loose. Each cycle widens the gap. By late winter, a fill that looked fine in November can be gone, and the hole is often bigger than before.
That's why first-time fix rates matter so much heading into the darker months. Every repair that holds through a freeze-thaw season is a crew visit that doesn't have to happen in February, when demand is highest and working conditions are at their worst.

Building a better winter toolkit

Preventative work such as surface dressing, resurfacing and drainage is the long-term defence, and both councils are investing in it. But new defects will still appear this winter, and some will need attention in rain or near-freezing conditions.
For those repairs, material choice can tilt the odds. EZ STREET® Ambient® Asphalt is engineered to stay thermally resilient through temperature swings, and it's formulated to work in water, so a repair can go into a wet hole rather than waiting for a dry day. It bonds to existing asphalt and concrete, needs no heating, mixing or tack coat, and is ready for traffic once compacted. Because it can be stockpiled for months without degrading, depots can keep it ready for the first freeze-thaw spike instead of scrambling for supply.

The measure that matters

Lancashire and Barnsley are approaching winter from different starting points, but they're aiming at the same target: fewer repairs that have to be done twice. For any council or property manager preparing for the season, that's the right goal. Clear the drains, protect surfaces that are still sound, and fill new defects with performance-proven materials such as Ambient® that are built to endure. Lancashire and Barnsley Head Into Winter Chasing First-Time Pothole Fixes

Ask any driver what bothers them most about potholes and you'll usually get two answers: the jolt, and the wait. Auckland Council is going after the wait.
On October 5, the council relaunched its annual Pothole Promise, committing to repair 95% of reported potholes on Auckland's busiest roads within 24 hours of a report. Potholes on other sealed roads are targeted for repair within five working days. The campaign will run across radio, outdoor advertising, digital channels and social media with a simple message for motorists: if you spot a pothole, don't just steer around it. Report it.

AI-generated illustration.

A big network, a simple promise

The scale is significant. The council says it manages around 8,000 kilometres of local roads, including more than 1,000 kilometres of high-volume arterial and regional routes that carry over 10,000 vehicle movements each day. During last year's campaign, crews repaired 642 potholes in four weeks.
Alan Wallace, the council's Head of Road Asset Maintenance and Renewals, summed up the driver's perspective: "Nobody enjoys hitting one on their commute, and we know they can cause damage to vehicles and create unnecessary headaches for drivers." Councillor Andy Baker, who chairs the Transport and Infrastructure Delivery Committee, called the promise "exactly the sort of practical, get-it-done approach Aucklanders expect."

Why speed matters to drivers

On a busy arterial, a single open pothole can be hit by thousands of vehicles before anyone fixes it. Each impact risks a punctured tyre, a bent rim or knocked-out alignment. Each sudden swerve to avoid it creates a safety risk for cyclists, motorcyclists and other drivers. Cutting response time from weeks to a day sharply reduces the number of vehicles exposed to that hazard.
Speed also protects the road. A small defect left open collects water, loses its edges and grows. The longer it sits, the bigger and more expensive the eventual repair.

The honest part: many fast fixes are temporary

Auckland Transport's own maintenance page is candid about the limits of reactive work. "A pothole repair means making it safe as quickly as possible. It's a temporary repair," it says, adding that "some potholes will keep reoccurring when there's been lots of rain."
That's the trade-off every road agency faces. Fast response and long life aren't always delivered by the same repair. Auckland is tackling the long-term side through renewal: the council says more than 500 kilometres of sealed roads were resurfaced last year, with an even bigger programme planned for 2026/27. Resurfacing is how a network stops producing potholes in the first place.
For drivers, though, what happens between the report and the reseal matters. A quick fill that pops out after the next downpour means another hit, another report and another crew visit to the same spot.

Closing the gap between fast and lasting

This is where repair material choice can help a 24-hour promise go further. EZ STREET® Ambient® Asphalt is designed for the conditions that undo fast fixes. It's formulated to work in water, bonds to existing asphalt and concrete, and is ready for traffic immediately after placement. Crews don't need to heat it, mix it or apply a tack coat, and it can be stockpiled for months, so a rapid-response team can carry it on the truck and use it the moment a report comes in.
In a city that sees plenty of rain, that combination matters. A repair placed quickly in a wet hole that stays put is a repair drivers don't have to report twice.

What drivers can do

Auckland's campaign is a good reminder that motorists are part of the repair system:

Report it. Crews can only fix what they know about. Aucklanders can report potholes online, and Auckland Transport lists 09 355 3553 for road issues that pose an immediate risk to people or property.

Be specific. An exact address or landmark helps crews find the defect fast.

Slow down near crews. Faster repairs mean more crews working on live roads.

The campaign's closing line, that potholes may be inevitable but waiting weeks for them to be fixed shouldn't be, is one any city could adopt. Pair that speed with enduring, thermally stable materials like Ambient®, and the promise gets stronger: fixed fast, and fixed to stay fixed. Most cities treat pothole season as something that happens to them in February. Chicago is trying to get ahead of it in October.
On Saturday, October 3, the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) sent more than 30 crews into some of the city's hardest-hit areas for a second straight weekend pothole blitz. The city said the push came as Chicago surpassed 330,000 potholes patched so far in 2026. The Saturday before, crews filled nearly 5,600 potholes in a single day, and the city set a goal of more than 5,000 for the follow-up, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

AI-generated illustration.

Why a fall blitz makes sense

Winter is normally CDOT's busiest stretch, with crews working seven days a week. The fall blitzes put extra crews on the street to clear outstanding repair needs before freeze-thaw cycles start working on every open crack and loose edge. Mayor Brandon Johnson framed the effort as preparing "our streets for the winter months ahead," adding that every pothole filled "makes our streets safer and more accessible for the people who rely on them every day."
That's the right framing. A pothole left open into December isn't a static defect. Water gets in, freezes, expands and loosens the surrounding pavement. Traffic does the rest. Catching defects in milder fall conditions, when crews can clean, shape and compact properly, gives every repair a better chance of lasting.

Volume is the headline. Durability is the story.

330,000 is a big number. It's also a reminder of how much repair work a large city absorbs in a single year, and how much of it can turn into repeat work. Independent tracking of city 311 data by Transparent.city found 33,381 pothole complaints citywide through September 29, up 39.6% from the same window of 2025. More complaints mean more fills. The real question for any agency is how many of those fills will need a second visit.
CDOT is pairing patching with longer-term work. The city says more than 100 miles of streets and alleys have been resurfaced this year, with paving continuing through the fall. Resurfacing is the long-term answer for worn-out streets. Patching keeps the network safe until the paver arrives.
What happens in between is where material choice matters. A fill that loosens after the first hard freeze gets counted twice: once in October and again in March. A repair that bonds well, compacts tight and holds up through temperature swings drops off the list for good.

What other cities and property owners can borrow

Chicago's approach offers a playbook that scales down to a small town, a campus or a commercial lot:

Do a fall sweep. Inspect and fix before the first freeze, not after the first complaint.

Target the worst areas first. CDOT focused its blitz on areas with the greatest need, which is where both safety risk and repeat failures tend to concentrate.

Make reporting easy. Chicago takes reports through 311, the CHI311 app and 311.chicago.gov. Good data lets crews plan routes instead of chasing calls.

Choose repairs designed to endure. A blitz only pays off if the work survives the season it was meant to prepare for.

That last point is where EZ STREET® Ambient® Asphalt fits. It's a ready-to-use, engineered asphalt that bonds to asphalt and concrete, is formulated to work even in wet holes, and is ready for traffic as soon as it's placed and compacted. Because it can be stockpiled for months without losing effectiveness, crews and facility managers can keep material on hand for a fall blitz and for the January call that comes in after a thaw.

The winter test

Chicago's crews will find out over the next few months how their fall work holds. Every repair that's still smooth in March is one fewer crew trip, one fewer damaged tire and one less frustrated neighbor. That's the measure that matters for any city: not just how many potholes get filled, but how many stay filled.
For agencies and property managers planning their own pre-winter push, thermally resilient, performance-proven materials such as Ambient® help turn a big repair count into repairs you can count on. Some years, the pothole queue is annoying. Other years, it rewrites the budget.
Milwaukee is living through the second kind. As of 31 August 2026, the city had taken 23,075 pothole service requests, far above its typical annual average of about 8,600. Spectrum News 1 reported that nearly 7,800 of those requests were still open when Common Council members moved to free up cash and speed up the work. Residents weren’t imagining the bounce in the steering wheel. The data caught up with the commute.
The immediate response was practical. The council moved $300,000 left over from road projects that came in under budget. The money will speed up concrete panel replacements in alleys and local streets and bring outside contractors into work that usually sits with the Department of Public Works. Ald. Peter Burgelis called it a “record year” that deserves a “record response.” Mayor Cavalier Johnson’s proposed 2027 budget would raise road-repair funding from $16.7 million to $19.2 million. That includes $12 million for paving that extends street life, $7 million for reconstruction, and equipment to fill more holes.
That mix is the right instinct. Reactive fills keep people moving. Capital paving and reconstruction shrink next winter’s crater list. South Side residents who describe the same driveway-edge hole for months are the human cost of a backlog that outruns crews. Every delayed repair gives water, freeze-thaw, and traffic another chance to turn a manageable defect into a structural failure.
Here’s the part cities sometimes miss when call volume spikes. Going faster with the same temporary habits just multiplies return visits. Burgelis himself said the goal is to stop depending on the same alley or panel that “keeps getting filled and filled year after year.” That’s a materials and methods problem. If a hole is cleaned poorly, left wet without a mix that can handle it, or opened to traffic before it’s compacted, the next rain reopens the bill.
Private sites feel a quieter version of the same pressure. Warehouse yards, apartment lots, and school drives don’t show up in Milwaukee’s 311 dashboard. They still produce the same claims, the same complaints, and the same scramble when a wet week opens three defects overnight. Property managers can’t wait for a mid-year council resolution. They need a repair they can stock, place, and trust.
EZ STREET® Ambient® Asphalt is built for that kind of response. It’s an engineered, ready-to-use repair material designed for enduring patches that stay thermally stable across temperature swings. Crews can use bags for smaller defects or order by the ton for larger programmes. When the repair is properly prepared and compacted, it goes in without on-site heating, and traffic comes back sooner than a “wait for the plant” cycle usually allows. Learn more at ezstreetasphalt.com.
Ambient® doesn’t replace Milwaukee’s proposed paving increase. Fresh surface is still the best long-term defence. What Ambient® can do is close the gap between “reported today” and “driving on it tonight” with a performance-proven fill. That way the record year becomes a story about catching up, not about chasing the same holes twice.
If your city just posted ugly request totals, treat the number as a planning signal. Fund the crews. Fund the resurfacing. And when you do fill, choose materials engineered to last through the next storm cycle, not just until the next complaint.

Milwaukee logged 23,075 pothole requests by late August 2026, nearly triple its average. Here’s what cities can learn from the scramble.

Milwaukee’s Record Pothole Year

Milwaukee’s Record Pothole Year — And Why Speed Alone Isn’t Enough

Plymouth didn’t try to wish its potholes away. It put a number on them and gave the public a counter to watch.
Project Pothole, launched for the 2026/27 financial year, commits an extra £4.06 million to road repairs and maintenance. The target is 20,000 potholes and road defects, more than double the city’s usual annual output of about 8,300. The council’s own counter, updated after August, showed 1,110 repairs that month and 6,383 since April. That’s roughly 32% of the annual goal. Plymouth has 524 miles of roads and 744 miles of pavements, so that’s a visible change of pace after a wet winter sent defect reports sharply higher.
The interesting part isn’t only the volume. It’s the toolkit. Plymouth isn’t betting on a single treatment. The programme combines traditional fills, specialist seek-and-repair teams, Roadmender technology using sustainable materials, Velocity spray-injection repairs, resurfacing schemes, surface-preservation treatments covering tens of thousands of square metres, and extra gully clearance to keep water from causing the next failure. Different defects get different tools. That’s how you repair more without pretending every hole is the same.
Drivers will judge the project the only way that counts: whether the same crater greets them after the next storm. Councils across Britain have learned, sometimes the hard way, that a high fill count can sit alongside a high rework rate when interim repairs don’t hold. Plymouth’s own messaging is refreshingly honest about that. Not every defect will be fixed right away, and not every road will be resurfaced this year. Priorities follow safety, condition data, inspections, and resident reports. What residents should notice is more crews, in more places, more often.
That honesty is useful for agencies and private managers elsewhere. A year-long blitz only pays off if each method matches the defect and the material can handle real traffic and real weather. Spray injection can be fast on shallow failures. Preservation can buy years for a surface that still has life. Deep, wet, or heavily loaded holes still need a fill that bonds, compacts, and stays thermally stable when temperatures swing.
The same logic applies at a smaller scale for sites outside the council programme, such as retail parks, industrial estates, and campus roads. You don’t need a £4 million counter. You need a repair you can use when a defect appears, without waiting months for a full resurfacing window.
EZ STREET® Ambient® Asphalt fits that gap. It’s a ready-to-use, engineered mix for potholes and related pavement repairs, available in bags or by the ton. When the hole is properly prepared and compacted, crews can place Ambient® without on-site mixing or heating and open it to traffic promptly. Its thermally resilient performance is designed for enduring patches rather than a short-lived plug. Plymouth’s lesson for 2026 is simple. Fund the surge. Track the progress in public. And treat “how we fill” as seriously as “how many we fill.” Volume without durability just means revisiting last month’s map faster.

Plymouth’s £4.06m Project Pothole has passed 6,383 repairs toward a 20,000 target. The real lesson is using more than one repair tool.

Plymouth Project Pothole Hits 6,000 Repairs

Plymouth’s Project Pothole Hits 6,000 Repairs — Why Method Mix Matters

In a city that rarely sleeps, closing a lane for one shallow pothole can feel like punishing everyone for a single square metre of failed asphalt.
Bengaluru is testing a different approach. In mid-September 2026, Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda launched a ₹2 crore Jet Patcher pilot with the Central City Corporation. The machine was demonstrated on the road between Vidhana Soudha and the M.S. Building. Officials say one unit clears debris from the hole, applies binder and repair mix, and can return traffic in about ten minutes. That avoids the full roadblock a traditional hot-mix setup often needs for an isolated hole.
The minister was clear about what the technology is for. Jet Patcher targets smaller failures, roughly two to three inches deep (up to about 50 mm). It isn’t meant for deep structural craters where both the asphalt and the aggregate have failed. Bengaluru’s roads produce both kinds, he noted. In some places only the top layer has worn away. In others, the damage goes deeper and needs a different response. The pilot will show whether quick, low-disruption repairs can scale across the city’s corporations if the results hold.
That honesty about limits is as useful as the machine itself. Hot-mix crews bring strength and familiarity, but they also bring constraints: rollers, plant schedules, monsoon interruptions, and the awkward cost of mobilising a full setup for one lonely defect. A city with only one repair method will either over-mobilise for small holes or leave them until they grow into big ones. Matching the tool to the defect protects both budgets and commute times.
There’s a wider lesson for municipal and private pavement managers. Innovation isn’t a press event. It’s a portfolio. You want fast, traffic-friendly methods for shallow failures and heavier treatments when the base is gone. You want drainage and surface care so water doesn’t keep winning. And you want materials that don’t force crews to choose between “wait for perfect conditions” and “throw something in and hope.”
Campuses, logistics yards, and local streets often need a ready-to-place option between capital schemes. EZ STREET® Ambient® Asphalt is engineered for enduring patches that stay thermally stable. It’s ready to use in bags or by the ton and designed to go in without on-site heating when the hole is properly prepared and compacted. It’s a performance-proven way out of the temporary-fix cycle. See ezstreetasphalt.com.
Bengaluru’s pilot won’t erase every monsoon crater. No single machine will. If the ₹2 crore test succeeds, though, it could change the default for the small, widespread failures that clog traffic and frustrate drivers every week. Fix the right hole with the right method, reopen the road, and save the heavy crew for the defects that actually need it.
Cities watching from afar should take the cue. Don’t ask whether a new repair technology is magic. Ask which defects it fits, how long the patch lasts, and whether your toolkit still has an engineered answer when the hole is deeper than the pilot’s sweet spot.

Not every city waits for a crisis headline to fund its streets. Some put the programme on the ballot again and ask residents to keep the promise going.
That’s what Norman, Oklahoma did on 7 April 2026. Voters approved Proposition 1, authorising $35 million in bonds for resurfacing, rehabilitation, and reconstruction over five years. City materials stressed that this was not a new tax. It extends the Street Maintenance Bond programme residents have renewed since 2005. The first projects were set to start in August 2026, with the full list finished by 2031. About 180 lane miles are expected to improve under the renewal.
The programme’s design matters as much as the dollar figure. Norman maintains roughly 800 miles of streets. The bond splits into urban asphalt rehabilitation ($9.5 million), urban concrete rehabilitation ($8 million), roadway reconstruction ($7 million), rural road improvements ($5.25 million), and preventative maintenance ($5.25 million). The city uses pavement-condition data to catch streets while they’re still in fair shape, when repairs cost far less than full reconstruction. Its reported average Pavement Condition Index is around 77, above many U.S. peers. Since 2005, earlier bond cycles have maintained, rehabilitated, or reconstructed about 578 lane miles, and city materials say every listed project was completed.
That’s the quiet success story behind the election-night result. Residents keep voting yes when they can see finished streets, not just campaign language. For pavement professionals, the takeaway goes beyond Oklahoma. Preventative maintenance and timely rehabilitation cost less than waiting for failure. A secured bond lets Public Works plan several years ahead instead of living in annual scramble mode. And a published street list builds accountability, because people know which corridors are coming and when.
Still, a bond doesn’t fill every hole the day it appears. Between scheduled mill-and-overlays, utility cuts, weather swings, and heavy local traffic, Norman will keep producing defects that need a good interim repair, like any growing city. The same goes for private pavement outside the bond map, such as apartment lots, commercial drives, and school campuses. Capital programmes protect the network. Spot repairs protect people until the capital crew arrives.
That’s where material choice becomes part of the public-value story. EZ STREET® Ambient® Asphalt is an engineered, ready-to-use repair product designed for enduring patches that stay thermally stable. Crews and property managers can stock bags for small defects or order by the ton for larger work. When preparation and compaction are done right, it goes in without on-site heating, so sites stay open instead of looping through temporary fixes. More at ezstreetasphalt.com.
Norman’s voters did their part by funding continuity. The hard part is the same everywhere: turning that money into surfaces that feel better for years, not weeks. Schedule the rehabilitation. Protect streets while they’re still fair. And when a defect shows up between cycles, fill it with something performance-proven, so the next bond conversation starts from pride, not apology.

Money without machines is a promise. Machines without a plan are just parked equipment. The Northern Cape tried to put both on the road at once.
On 24 June 2026, Premier Zamani Saul joined provincial and municipal leaders in Kimberley to launch a road-maintenance and pothole-patching programme under Operation Vala Zonke. It’s backed by a newly unveiled R98 million Yellow Fleet. For Sol Plaatje Municipality, which covers Kimberley and Galeshewe, officials set aside about R26.8 million for a roughly three-month push. The goal is to repair around 18,500 square metres of road across all 33 wards, improve mobility, and cut vehicle damage. Patching is paired with cleaning and stormwater work so water doesn’t undo the fill.
The local backlog was real. Municipal records showed more than 650 pothole and road-related complaints. Long Street was chosen as a launch site because of its economic role, heavy traffic, and visible deterioration. Crews came from the municipality and the Department of Roads and Public Works, including Expanded Public Works Programme workers, asphalt repair teams, and Jet-Patcher units. Officials described this as a government-led alternative to relying only on outside contractors. MEC Fufe Makatong said the Yellow Fleet (graders, tippers, water tankers, loaders, excavators, and more) would strengthen internal capacity and speed up response across the province’s wide network.
That focus on capacity applies well beyond South Africa. Plenty of places can announce a fund. Fewer can line up crews, materials, and equipment in the same week a complaint comes in. Fleet investment, training, and a clear priority map are what turn a press launch into square metres that stay smooth. Drainage and cleaning matter too. A patch sitting next to a blocked stormwater channel is set up for a short life.
There’s also a practical reminder for cities and private site owners. Working together beats finger-pointing when the network is failing in public view. Northern Cape officials presented the Kimberley blitz as a joint effort, with the province, district, and local municipality sharing tools and labour. Private industrial parks and retail centres won’t get a premier at their launch, but they can copy the discipline. Inspect, prioritise by safety and traffic, fix with materials that endure, and deal with the water that created the hole.
Some interim and reactive repairs can’t wait for a full reconstruction package. For those, EZ STREET® Ambient® Asphalt offers an engineered, ready-to-use option designed for thermally stable, enduring patches. It suits municipal and property-management crews who need a performance-proven fill without the usual temporary-fix cycle. Explore product options at ezstreetasphalt.com.
A Yellow Fleet doesn’t guarantee perfect roads. No fleet does. What it signals is a shift from outsourcing every response to owning the ability to act. Pair that capacity with preventative drainage, honest priorities, and repair materials built for real weather and real traffic loads. Then a three-month blitz can become a habit of keeping streets serviceable before complaints climb past 650 again.

Northern Cape’s R98 Million Yellow Fleet — Capacity Matters as Much as Cash

You don’t need a press conference to know when a city’s streets are fighting back. You feel it in the steering wheel. You hear it in the rim. You see it in the orange cones that seem to multiply after every hard winter.
On 17 September 2026, New York City turned that daily grind into a milestone. Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani joined Department of Transportation crews — and a 311 worker who fields the complaints that start the whole chain — to fill the city’s 200,000th pothole of the year on Troutman Street in Bushwick. The mayor’s office framed the moment as proof that “little things” still signal whether government is delivering: catch basins that drain, playgrounds that work, and roads that don’t punish every commute.
The numbers behind the photo op are what matter for pavement people. NYC DOT says roadway crews still average about 3,000 pothole repairs a week. Earlier in the spring, the city had already marked its 100,000th fill of the year on Staten Island — described as the highest first-100-days total in more than a decade. That pace only makes sense after a brutal winter. Freeze-thaw opens cracks. Water works in. Traffic finishes the job. Then the phones light up.
Here’s the part that deserves more attention than the anniversary fill itself: while crews chase defects, milling and repaving teams are also racing through the warm months. Officials say the city has already paved about 757 lane miles in 2026 — roughly the distance from New York to Nashville. City leaders keep repeating a simple hierarchy. Filling potholes keeps people moving today. Fresh pavement is still the most effective way to stop next winter’s crater from forming in the first place.
That pairing — reactive repair plus capital resurfacing — is the real story for agencies and private managers everywhere, not just the five boroughs. A high fill count can mean a city is responsive. It can also mean the network is producing defects faster than capital work can erase them. Both can be true at once. The constructive response isn’t to mock the milestone. It’s to ask whether every fill is engineered to last through the next storm cycle, and whether the streets that keep failing are queued for real surface work.
New Yorkers are encouraged to report problems through 311 — calls, app, web, and more — because a city this size can’t rely on drive-by spotting alone. The same logic applies on a smaller campus, industrial park, or HOA lot. If you wait until a defect swallows a suspension, you’ve already paid more than a timely repair would have cost.
For sites that can’t wait on a full mill-and-overlay window, material choice still decides whether a repair is a pause or a solution. EZ STREET® Ambient® Asphalt is a ready-to-use, performance-proven mix designed for potholes and related pavement repairs. It’s available in bags for smaller jobs and by the ton for larger ones. Crews can place it without on-site mixing or heating when the pavement is properly prepared and compacted. Public product guidance highlights bonding to asphalt, concrete, and itself; workability in wet conditions; instant traffic readiness; stockpileability; and thermally resilient performance across temperature swings.
None of that replaces a city’s 757-lane-mile paving program. Ambient® isn’t a substitute for structural reconstruction when a base has failed. What it can do — for municipal contractors between plant runs, for facility teams after utility work, for property managers who can’t close a lot for a week — is close the gap between “reported today” and “open to traffic now” with an engineered fill that aims to endure rather than wash out on the next wet week.
If your region just celebrated a big repair number, treat it as a progress check, not a finish line. Keep reporting defects early. Keep funding the resurfacing that prevents them. And when you do need a spot repair that has to perform under real traffic and real weather, look for materials built for that job — not a temporary scoop that invites a second visit.
New York’s 200,000th fill is a reminder that pavement work is never finished. It’s a practice. The cities that win on it combine volume, visibility, and materials that don’t make crews come back for the same hole twice.

NYC marked its 200,000th pothole fill of 2026 while paving hundreds of lane miles. Here’s why volume and prevention have to travel together.

New York Hits 200,000 Pothole Repairs — And Why Repaving Still Matters More

Ask almost any mayor what they heard on the doorstep, and roads climb the list fast. In Greater Manchester, the new mayor didn’t wait long to answer.
On 3 September 2026, Bev Craig unveiled a £60 million pothole repair programme spanning all 10 boroughs. Transport for Greater Manchester said the allocation should cover repair and maintenance of more than a million square metres of road and pavement — on the order of 125 kilometres of network when you stretch the figure out. The cash comes from existing regional transport budgets, following national uplifts for highway maintenance, and it’s meant to hit both urgent defects and preventative resurfacing so today’s bumps don’t become tomorrow’s craters.
The split is formula-driven: more road length, more money. Published borough figures include roughly £8.16 million for Manchester, £8.24 million for Wigan, £6.82 million for Stockport, £6.55 million for Bolton, and smaller but still substantial pots for Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Tameside, and Trafford. Craig’s message was blunt in a useful way. About 2.5 billion journeys move across Greater Manchester’s roads each year. People complained. The fund is designed to get money “out of the door quickly.”
That urgency is understandable. A garage owner in Eccles told BBC reporters that pothole-damaged vehicles show up nearly every day — tyres, alignment, suspension. From a shop’s perspective, broken roads are business. From a household’s perspective, they’re another bill in a high-cost year. Smooth surfaces put money back in people’s pockets by not destroying it in the first place.
Still, funding announcements always invite a second question: will the repairs stick? Rod Dennis of the RAC welcomed investment but argued that Britain’s “pothole woes” need guaranteed long-term funding over many years — and an end to the “patch and dash” approach some councils have relied on. He’s pointing at a pattern drivers know too well. A hole gets filled. Rain returns. Traffic returns. The same spot fails again before the financial year is over.
Preventative resurfacing in the Greater Manchester package is the right counterweight. Surface that still has life left shouldn’t be left to unravel into a field of defects. But even well-funded programmes leave gaps: utility trenches, isolated failures on otherwise sound streets, estate roads that miss the capital schedule, private accesses that sit outside the borough list. Those sites need reactive repairs that behave like engineered pavement, not like a short-term plug.
That’s where material selection becomes part of the public-value story. EZ STREET® Ambient® Asphalt is a ready-to-use, technology-engineered repair mix for potholes and related pavement work. Bags suit smaller defects; tonnage covers larger programmes. When the hole is properly prepared and compacted, crews can place Ambient® without on-site mixing or heating. It’s formulated to bond to asphalt, concrete, and itself; to work in wet conditions; to take traffic right away; and to remain thermally stable enough to stockpile and deploy across shifting seasons.
Using Ambient® doesn’t mean a borough ignores resurfacing. It means the money Craig unlocked can buy fewer return visits between capital schemes. For contractors working across multiple authorities, stockpileable, performance-proven material also reduces the scramble that happens when plant windows close or a sudden wet spell opens a cluster of defects overnight.
Greater Manchester’s £60 million won’t rebuild every street. No single fund does. What it can do is change the pace of response and the quality of the interim work that keeps people safe while longer schemes roll out. Drivers will judge the programme the only way that matters: by whether the same crater greets them next month.
If your city just announced a similar package, celebrate the budget — then audit the toolkit. Pair preventative surfacing with reactive fills that are built to endure. Report defects early. And when a crew has one shot at a busy corridor, give them an engineered option worth the lane closure.
