On the Eastern Cape coast, the people who drive the R330 every day have stopped waiting. Residents and ratepayers in Humansdorp, St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis have been painting, flagging and filling hundreds of potholes along the road themselves, according to The Herald.
The paper reported on October 30 that more than 400 new potholes have appeared along the route while a multimillion-rand rehabilitation tender stalls. Volunteers from the St Francis Community Group's roads and traffic team carefully mark and flag each hole before repairing it, to keep drivers safe.

A community effort that keeps growing
This isn't a one-day cleanup. Earlier this year, local residents started a community-funded pothole project on the road between St Francis Bay and Humansdorp, raising more than R100,000 for materials, according to local outlets Kouga Chronicle and St Francis Today. Later storms opened more holes and prompted fresh appeals for donations.
Why roads like the R330 break down
The R330 is a coastal route with heavy rain and steady traffic. Water gets into cracks, weakens the layers beneath, and traffic breaks the surface apart. Without regular maintenance, small holes become large ones quickly, and each storm adds more.
Making volunteer repairs last
Community crews have limited time, money and equipment. That's why the repair material matters so much. Every bag that washes out after the next rain is donated money lost.
EZ STREET® Ambient® Asphalt is designed for crews like these. It needs no heating, no mixing and no tack coat. It can be placed in wet holes and holes holding water, bonds to the existing road, and is ready for traffic once it's compacted, with simple hand tools or a vehicle tire. It's thermally resilient and can be stored for months, so a group can buy in bulk and use it as new holes appear.
What helps on the ground
- Mark hazards first. The St Francis volunteers' practice of flagging each hole protects drivers before the repair.
- Clean out the hole. Remove loose debris so the repair has a solid base.
- Compact well. Firm compaction is the key to an enduring patch.
Volunteer patching shouldn't replace proper road maintenance, and residents are still pushing for the rehabilitation work to go ahead. But in the meantime, enduring materials like Ambient® help a community's effort last. Learn more at ezstreetasphalt.com.
