Most potholes start as annoyances. A few become emergencies — the kind that shut lanes, stretch into multi-day work, and leave thousands of drivers checking alternate routes.

In early September 2026, that’s what happened on Interstate 80 through Parleys Canyon in Utah. UDOT crews tackled a large pothole under the center median near milepost 132. The left lane closed in both the eastbound and westbound directions. Utah Highway Patrol said the damage needed more extensive work than a usual quick patch. Closures were expected through Thursday and possibly into Friday morning.

Lt. Zach Randall of UHP put it plainly: it was a really bad hole that required more than a typical asphalt touch-up.

When a hole reaches that scale on a canyon interstate, traffic pays first. Freight schedules slip. Commuters add minutes — or hours. Detours push volume onto roads that weren’t built for the surge. Safety risk rises wherever congestion stacks up behind cones.
